Idemitsu Kosan History

From its modest beginnings in 1911, Idemitsu Kosan started off in Japan as a company selling lubricating oils. Throughout its history, Idemitsu Kosan has been pushing the boundaries of innovation and technology with an intense focus on research and development.

As one of Japan’s leading petroleum companies, Idemitsu Kosan has since expanded and moved into areas such as procurement of crude oil, refining, sales of petroleum products and the development of oil resources, petrochemicals and alternative energy sources.

Today, the company has grown far and wide with over 50 offices and over 9,203 employees in Japan and overseas and is listed on the Fortune Global 500 index. Idemitsu Kosan’s global network has made it’s presence in countries such as the USA, Germany, China, India, Taiwan, Indonesia, Thailand, Korea, Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia and Vietnam.

Expanded coal business.

Acquired an interest in the Ebenezer Coal Mine in Australia and started import of coal from the Company’s own mine.

1966

“Idemitsu Maru”, the first 200,000 ton tanker in the world, placed in service.

“Idemitsu Maru”, the first 200,000 ton tanker in the world, placed in service.

The Company had imported crude oil utilizing its own tankers. The Idemitsu Maru served as a pipeline connecting oil-producing countries in the Middle East with Japan.

1964

Tokuyama Plant completed. Commenced businesses in petrochemical industry.

Equipped with large-scale ethylene manufacturing facilities, the Plant became the core of the Shunan Industrial Zone by taking advantage of the adjacent refinery.

1957

Tokuyama Refinery completed. Commenced oil refining business.

The Company completed construction of its first refinery at Tokuyama, which served as a base for the development of the Shunan Industrial Zone in Yamaguchi Prefecture.

Idemitsu Shokai was founded in Moji, Fokuoka Prefecture. (Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd. was incorporated in 1940).
